Sixty years ago, as a Co-Op Engineering student with MOTCH Machinery, I met Phil Wyckoff, who owned Precision Balancing and Spindle of Mentor, Ohio. MOTCH developed one of the earliest applications for ceramic cutting edges for high-speed turning and boring of cast iron brake drums, brake discs, and electric motor end bell housings. This application development work at MOTCH with Phil Wyckoff piqued my curiosity for spindles, cutting tools, dynamic balancing, bearing preload, and lubrication used in high-speed precision machining. Over the years, limited available knowledge and support for spindle technology have created confusion due to poor standardization. This lack of standardization and inadequate qualified technical support remains a chronic and costly source of production downtime today. My technological adventure went onward, spending 20 years in cutting tools first at VALENTINE, before 14 years with SANDVIK.
When I left the management of KOMO Machine in 1995 to lead Deckel-Maho-Gildemeister (DMG America) G. COLOMBO, a leading Italian spindle Innovator, asked that I create a US Service Center. This was primarily to service end-users fabricating wood, plastic, stone, marble, glass, and non-ferrous metals. Our research found an underserved market requiring 9 to 18 weeks for spindle repairs being returned to Italy. Precision Drive Systems (PDS) was established in 1996 with an extensive investment in European factory training and a substantial inventory of replacement parts and spindles, achieving 3 to 4-day service.
Our sense of urgency, obsession with workmanship quality, and customer service satisfaction remain our credo today. Our depth and breadth of experience in spindle technology span more than 40,000 spindle repairs over 25 years. PDS now enjoys long-term customer loyalty and passionate employee dedication. Today, we are a leading spindle repair company, still adhering to the core values that got us here - RELIABILITY of our spindles, our service, our employees, our suppliers, and loyal customers. Our mantra is to serve reliably, have fun, and increase customer productivity.
